Various previews and hands-on coverage has covered the new magic system; one that ostensibly frames magic as something you 'equip', rather than an extension of a character's base abilities. It also sees a return of FF VIII's 'drawing' system, where various interactive 'junctions' are available on the map, meaning you have locate them before extracting/refilling your various meters.

GearNuke note that magic is comprised of "just 3 main elements; fire, lighting and ice. We can draw the magic through the various junction points located on the world map and we can then combine these elements to craft a variety of magic. We can use items like a potion to make a cure spell that also does the job of hurting the enemies, for example. We can also craft a stop magic or other forms of status effect-inducing magic this way."

Crafting magic and combining its various potential parts in theory allows for a wider variety of possible outcomes, but GearNuke also state that as magic is an equip-able, "[you] have to allocate one (or more) weapon slot out of the available 4 to the magic system."

Such a major shakeup in the core foundations of the franchise itself is bound to annoy or put off long-time fans, but GearNuke conclude saying they "definitely enjoyed [their] time" deploying these abilities in the field.
