Mass Effect 4: 10 Core Gameplay Tweaks That Would Improve Everything
7. Make Teammate Roles Essential
Speaking of combat variation and the 'forcing' of you to adapt to certain situations, part of that also extends to the crew members themselves. How often did you take Miranda out with you, just because she was the one you were furthering a romantic lead with? Or Garrus because he could provide a Concussive Shot? That's not knocking the characters at all, but aside from in the loyalty missions you never got the sense that certain people could have an impact on a mission. If their particular skills could open up a different path through a level or converse in a meaningful way with an NPC, this would go a long way to making it feel like your entire team was fighting the good fight. There are snippets of contextual audio recorded for your companions to chime in with every now and then, but it lacks an overall purpose that could really enhance the teamwork aspect of the experience. ME2's Suicide Mission was one of the best in the whole trilogy, utilising everyone's strengths whilst also playing on the fact you needed to know fairly well who was confident with what - a perfect template going forward.
