Resident Evil 8 Village: Story & Ending Explained

The Fate of Ethan Winters

Ethan Winters Resident Evil 8
Capcom

All Ethan Winters ever wanted to do was keep his family safe, and after the events at the Baker Family home he thought that nightmare was finally over, but he was so very wrong. Throughout the two games he features as the lead, Ethan takes a ton of punishment and it never really lets up, yet somehow he always bounces back. And that's because of what took place way back at the Bakers.

After his showdown with the Fourth Lord of the region, Heisenberg, Ethan is finally confronted by Mother Miranda in her truest form. But this doesn't end well for Ethan and he has his heart ripped out. As he falls to the floor and dies, Miranda bathes in his blood - though she didn't kill him, because, as Eveline tells Ethan in a dreamlike state, he was already dead.

Being dead would explain why Ethan is able to reattach limbs and almost rip his hands in half.

Killed by Jake Baker three years prior to the events in the Village, Mia even seems to be aware of this as she alludes to it in a conversation with Chris. Being more Mold than man now, Ethan was seen as an extra experiment by Miranda as she allowed him to clean up her prior experiments.

Fighting back from the brink of death one last time, he brings himself to fight Mother Miranda and rescue Rose before handing her to Chris and destroying what remains. He entered this story trying to save the ones he loved, and, for now, he achieved that goal.
