Safe to say that New Super Mario Bros. 2 is one of the more divisive entries into the Mario universe. Released just three years after New Super Mario Bros. Wii as, despite what the name of the game might suggest, the third game in the series, this is a game infamous for not bringing too much new to the table.

The world and level designs were pretty much the exact same as the 2D games that came before it, the enemies and boss battles were as bland as ever and even the 3DS graphics weren't much of an upgrade on the DS game that had been released six years earlier.

New Super Mario Bros. 2 was marketed as being all about coins, with the ultimate goal being the challenge of collecting up one million coins over a save file. And whilst the payoff for completing such a challenge was a bit underwhelming, the unique feature of going around the Mushroom Kingdom hoovering up as many coins as possible was surprisingly addictive.

From huge golden Bullet Bills, Power Flowers that turn everything into coins and the introduction of the Gold Block that rewards players with coins for how fast they go, the coin feature truly was a whole load of fun to run through.
