10 Horror Movies That Flopped Hard In 2025
6. Death of a Unicorn
Opus wasn't A24's only horror dud this year, and their other one was considerably more surprising.
Death of a Unicorn had one hell of a wild concept, which was easily sold through its title and trailers, while the cast was led by the ultra-popular likes of Jenna Ortega and Paul Rudd. And despite its heightened premise, it was budgeted at just $15 million.
Even with so much going for it, though, the horror-comedy topped out at a paltry $16.1 million.
This likely speaks mostly to the aggressively mixed response from critics and audiences alike, many feeling that Death of a Unicorn neither fully succeeded as a horror or as a comedy. It's also yet further proof that stars simply don't have the pulling power to open a movie on name alone anymore - save for the outliers like Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio.
Word-of-mouth here wasn't awful, but it just wasn't good enough to persuade folk to leave the house, and so within two weekends its business was done.
