10 Best Man Utd Performances This Decade

9. Man United 5-2 Spurs, 2009

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v11SaJa8dH4 There are certain moments in every title-winning team€™s season that one can pinpoint as pivotal. For the Manchester United side of 08/09, there were the crucial last-minute winners from Nemanja Vidic, Dimitar Berbatov and Federico Macheda, but also the crunch clash with Spurs in April. The club€™s firm strange-hold on the title had loosened slightly back-to-back defeats in March, but when Spurs arrived at Old Trafford at the end of April, Ferguson knew that if he beat them, the Premier League was theirs to lose. It was a performance of Jekyll-and-Hyde proportions, and only just scrambles into this list on account of the sheer stunning nature of its€™ second half. In a match that was eerily similar to Tottenham€™s 5-3 loss to Manchester United in 2001, Spurs commanded the first half and stormed into a shock lead with goals from Darren Bent and Luka Modric. One can only speculate that Ferguson must have brandished a hairdryer at half-time, as the Red Devils emerged with only one thought - reasserting their grip on the title. With the helping hand of a dodgy decision from the referee, Cristiano Ronaldo smashed home a penalty after Michael Carrick crumpled under a challenge from Heurelho Gomes. With an incessant Old Trafford roaring on the re-energised side, Wayne Rooney soon equalised before Ronaldo gave the Red Devils the lead a minute later with a headed third. They weren€™t done there, however, and three minutes later Rooney€™s volley crept over the line, before Dimitar Berbatov stabbed home a fifth against his former employers. It truly was a breathtaking second half served up from the Manchester United players.
