5. Man United 7-1 Roma, 2007
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NXBLHyGOOlM It was a scoreline that simply defied logic. Lets not forget, Manchester United had lost the first leg to Roma 2-1, and were having to bank on having scored an away goal as a form of solace as they strived to reach the Champions League semi-finals. Nerves were jangling around Old Trafford, as they welcomed the Italian giants to the Theatre of Dreams, but any fears of being made to pay for first-leg mistakes were quelled inside the opening twenty minutes. First, Michael Carrick grabbed the goal the Red Devils so desperately sought with a long-range effort, before Alan Smith fired home on his comeback, and Wayne Rooney added a third to finish off an excellent move. A shell-shocked Roma side struggled to put two passes together, as Man United rampaged forward, with an unstoppable Cristiano Ronaldo adding a goal either side of the break. Carrick grabbed his second of the night with a curling 25 yard strike on the hour mark, and while Danielle De Rossi grabbed a goal with an audacious back-heel, Patrice Evra made sure the last word would be going to the Mancunians with a 20 yard strike in off the post.
''It was a fantastic performance by every one of our players. The speed of our play and our penetration was absolutely superb. Thats absolutely the best night of European football weve had here. - Sir Alex Ferguson, April 2007.
It was certainly quite the turn-around.
