10 Best Newcastle United Debuts Ever

5. Jonjo Shelvey

V West Ham (16th Jan 2016) Some eye-brows were raised when Newcastle brought the enigmatic but temperamental Englishman from Swansea City just a few days after his performance against Oxford City in the cup went viral, but he is clearly a prodigiously talented player. Having promised he'd give 100%, the exciting prospect - still only 23 - lit up his debut against fifth place West Ham, looking classy on the ball, tenacious in the talent and with an eye for a creative pass that has been conspicuously absent from Newcastle's recent teams. Not only did he manage 92% passing accuracy, he also won 3 of his 5 attempted tackles (another of which was incorrectly flagged as a foul) and played a creative part in both goals. Few who were there will have ever seen as stunning a pass as he laid on for Daryl Janmaat to set up Gini Wijnaldum for his goal, either. Did It Last? Who knows, but let's all hope so. He looks like one of those players who could be as good as he wants to be.
