It's no secret that Tottenham have taken things to the next level since the beginning of last season. This was built on a foundation of rock solid defence and it's no coincidence that it occured right after the summer signing of Toby Alderweireld from Atletico Madrid for £11.5million after a great season on loan at Southampton.

The Belgian international has formed a brilliant centre back partnership with his international team mate Jan Vertonghen (arguably even better for club than for country) and a number of stalwart performances have led to him getting a reputation as Spurs' most important player. He even chips in his fair share of goals too, sparking many people to believe in his fantasy football value.

One of the biggest tellers of class is how important you are to your team, and Alderweireld is perhaps their most important, helping Tottenham achieve the best defensive record in the Premier League last season, with just 30 goals conceded over 38 games. This was a massive improvement over the two previous seasons in which they had conceded over 50. That form has more than carried over into this season, with Spurs being the only team to keep Manchester City goalless so far.

At 27 years old, Alderweireld is in the prime of his career and the Spurs fans will be delighted with the fact that he's signed on for five years, knowing that they'll get the best of him.
