One of the most well-known intercontinental rivalries on the footballing stage, the England/Argentina beef has played a big part in previous World Cups. The teams met for the first time in the fifties, but it wasn't until 1966 that the rivalry was truly established. The two sides met in the quarter finals of the World Cup, with England winning 1-0 thanks to a Geoff Hurst goal that many Argentinians will tell you was blatantly offside.

The Falklands War in the early eighties added even more spice to the fixture, and surely the most memorable incident of all came at the 1986 World Cup when Diego Maradona's "Hand of God" goal and subsequent superb individual strike sent England out of the tournament.

The 1998 World Cup again saw the Argentinians eliminate England after David Beckham kicked out at Diego Simeone, but England got one over on their old rivals at the 2002 tournament as Beckham redeemed himself by scoring the only goal of the game. The sides haven't met since 2005, but both are expected to potentially reach the latter stages of this summer's tournament, so an Argentina vs. England match-up could happen.
