10 Best Rivalries To Look Out For At World Cup 2018
5. Suarez/Africa
It all began at the 2010 World Cup. Ghana had surprised everyone by making it to the quarter finals of the competition, valiantly defeating the United States along the way, with Asamoah Gyan proving to be one of the tournament's breakout stars.
Then came one of the most memorable games of the World Cup, the quarter final clash between Ghana and Uruguay. Ghana held their own and could very well have claimed victory with a strike in the final minutes, but Uruguay's Luis Suarez handballed on the line to stop the shot, with Gyan missing the subsequent penalty and Uruguay eventually winning the game.
From that moment on, Suarez was justifiably cast as one of the villains of the tournament and is still vilified all around Africa. Ghana won't be at the tournament this summer, but fans of other African nations do share some solidarity with the Black Stars and it wouldn't be surprising to hear a few boos for Suarez if Uruguay meet up with the likes of Senegal or Nigeria. Suarez is also remembered for biting Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup and could be the source of further controversy this summer.
