Known as the Clásico del Río de la Plata, matches between Uruguay and Argentina are always exceptionally competitive, with many encounters going down in history for controversial incidents and aggressive behaviour from players and fans alike. This also happens to be the most-played derby in international football, with 192 matches played in total.

Argentina have claimed 89 victories, with Uruguay winning on 59 occasions, but the teams have only met each other twice at the World Cup, winning one game each. Famously, at the 1930 World Cup, Argentina and Uruguay met in the final. Argentina were winning 2-1 at half-time but Uruguay staged a dramatic comeback to win 4-2 and lift the World Cup trophy. While Uruguayan citizens celebrated, a mob took to the streets of Buenos Aires in Argentina and tossed rocks at the Uruguayan consulate.

Argentina have won three of the last five meetings between the sides and boast the stronger squad with the likes of Messi and Aguero among their ranks, but Uruguay are a force to be reckoned with and can also call upon the services of world class strikers like Suarez and Cavani. The teams could possibly meet in the quarter finals.
