10 Biggest Dodged Bullets In Man Utd Transfer History

10. Ilkay Gundogan

A controversial one to start off with, considering Ilkay Gundogan would undoubtedly improve Manchester United's midfield were they to sign the Borussia Dortmund star. However, they dodged a bullet when transfer speculation last summer ended with him staying put at the Westfalenstadion. That's because on the opening day of the 2013-14 Bundesliga season, Gundogan was forced off with a back injury that would prove to end his campaign after just one appearance, with the Germany international having not played since last August and forced to miss out on the World Cup in Brazil, which his country won. Gundogan's injury nightmare meant he effectively missed a whole year of football and United must be secretly pleased they didn't press ahead and sign the midfielder last summer, given his lengthy spell in the treatment room. The German has since returned to light training with Dortmund and will be hoping to make a return to competitive action before the end of the year.
