10 Biggest FIFA World Cup Controversies

1. Maradona's Handball Vs. England

If there's one moment of football worse than Frank Lampard's ghost goal to England fans, it's perhaps the most iconic and controversial moment in Fifa World Cup history.

Diego Maradona is easily amongst the very best players to ever grace the game of football, and was absolutely unplayable during the 1986 World Cup. The little Argentine either scored or assisted 10 of Argentina's 14 goals during their route to the trophy, with arguably his whole career summed up in their quarter-final game against the Three Lions.

In what had been a fairly tight contest, Maradona broke through the English defence with a mazy run through the lines before his pass was misplaced towards Steve Hodge. The English left midfielder miscued his clearance however, with the ball floating inbetween Maradona and goalkeeper Peter Shilton. The little Argentine forward lept like a salmon and punched the ball into the empty net, running off and encouraging his teammates saying: 'Come hug me, or the referee isn't going to allow it'.

Maradona would go onto score the goal of the century just five minutes later, but all the talk after the game was on this infamous moment. About the goal, Maradona simply said: '"un poco con la cabeza de Maradona y otro poco con la mano de Dios" ("a little with the head of Maradona and a little with the hand of God")'.
