10 Biggest FIFA World Cup Controversies
2. Frank Lampard's Ghost Goal
One of the oldest and grandest rivalries in the world of international football, England vs. Germany doesn't need controversy to make it a fiery affair. However, the fixture delivered one of the most infamous and controversial moments in World Cup history back in 2010 when the two sides met in the last sixteen.
Led by Fabio Capello, the Three Lions had been unconvincing throughout their group stage, were pretty heavy outsiders heading into the game and were blown away by the Germans in the opening twenty minutes. Miroslav Klose capitalised on some poor English defending to make it 1-0 before Lukas Podolski piled on the pain with a 32nd minute strike to double Germany's lead.
Though England probably deserved worse, they suddenly found themselves back in the game with a sudden Matthew Upson header out of the blue. The whole mood of the game shifted as England found themselves back in the game, swelling up the pitch with the ball at the feet of Frank Lampard on the edge of the box just two minutes later.
Every single person in the world watching the game then saw the ball cleanly hit the underside of the German crossbar, clearly bounce over the goal line twice before being picked up by Manuel Neuer. Fifa had famously been against the introduction of goal line technology before the tournament, and this controversial moment did more to bring technology into the game than any other before it.
