Ever since her first US Open triumph in 1999, Serena Williams has found herself towards the top of the women's world rankings and securing 21 Grand Slam titles has resulted in the American widely being regarded as the greatest of all time.

However, while there is no indication as to when Williams will decide to hang up her racquet, she will be 35 in September and it is yet to be seen how motivated she will remain to surpass the total of major tournaments won by Steffi Graf and Margaret Court.

At some stage, the WTA Tour will have to adapt to life without their standard-bearer and with Maria Sharapova currently sidelined after failing a drugs test, it may be up to one of tennis's most promising prospects to step up to the plate to take the sport into a new era.

Switzerland's Belinda Bencic could be that player with the 19-year-old already breaking into the world's top 10 but for this particular article, we are going to take a look at the up-and-comers who will be looking to establish themselves over the next few years and who we believe have the biggest chance of following Bencic into the game's upper echelons.

10. Katie Swan

It is still early days for Great Britain's Katie Swan given that she only turned 17 towards the end of March but it is difficult not to get excited over her potential after her progression over recent months.

She has already represented Great Britain in the Fed Cup - becoming the youngest player to play for the nation in the competition - and she registered a massive upset victory over American Lauren Davis after being handed a wildcard to enter qualifying in Miami.

That win has moved Kansas-based Swan up to 463 in the WTA rankings but her position in the standings will not be of immediate concern as she looks to play with the freedom that is currently serving her well at the moment.

However, Swan has had to deal with expectation since the start of 2015 after she reached the Australian Open girls' final but it is a positive sign that so far, she is taking the extra attention in her stride.

The progression of Johanna Konta, Heather Watson and Naomi Broady can only help Swan, but she must continue along her own path if she is to join them on the main tour.
