10 Biggest UFC Main Event Flops

3. Anderson Silva vs. Demian Maia (UFC 112)

Iojiojioj I'm not sure what it says about one of the legitimate all-time greats that he's found a place on this list twice. Possibly that such massive amounts of talent breeds complacency and when things grow too easy, boredom festers. Regardless, Silva is back again with an even more bizarre showing. For the UFC's first show in Dubai, Dana White and company wanted to make a big impact. Booking their biggest star in a fight against a guy who was at a huge disadvantage due to the contrast in styles looked to be nothing more than an exhibition of The Spider's brilliance and savagery. Instead what we got was something more akin to eclectic, contemptuous performance art. Demian Maia is a respectable fighter with an incredible jiu-jitsu game, but his only chance of winning this fight was a hail mary submission. Fueled by some apparent bad blood, Silva spent more time taunting his opponent than he did fighting. He danced around the cage, punched Maia's thigh, and just generally gave zero f*cks about finishing the fight. Towards the end the BJJ ace tried mocking the champ in return and the ref threatened a point deduction for Silva's inaction. Anderson won a decision but lost the support of the fans and his boss. €œI don€™t think I€™ve been more embarrassed in the 10 years of being in this business,€ said White. He apologized to the fans and promised he would make it up to them somehow. The champion said Maia disrespected him prior to the fight and that was the reason behind his strategy. So apparently in Anderson Silva's mind if you disrespect him, he'd much rather flap around like an inflatable air dancer instead of actually trying to beat you the hell up.
