There are not enough superlatives to describe what Robbie Fowler means to Liverpool fans and vice versa, so let’s just sum him up with one word - ‘God’. The prolific goalscorer, who spent twelve seasons at Anfield, was an idol for many Reds growing up and spawned a generation of youngsters dreaming of one day emulating their idol on the Anfield turf.

It’s one of the strongest marriages in English football, a bond that has never been broken. Even when Fowler went off to wear the colours of others, his loyalty to the Reds remained and passion for the club never wavered. The young Fowler would never have predicted he would have become a Kop hero however, having been aiming to carve out a career at the other side of Stanley Park.

How Everton managed to let slip a talent who grew up with such dreams of emulating his boyhood heroes at Goodison is anybody’s guess, but it is one they will have been ruing for years.

“When I was young I used to watch them (Everton) but I was at Liverpool when I was 11 years old - I’ve been a Liverpool fan from then on. Obviously I grew up watching very, very good Everton sides but I always knew deep down Liverpool were a better team.” - Robbie Fowler, March 2009.
