10 Candidates To Be Steve McClaren's Newcastle Captain
8. Moussa Sissoko
True the Frenchman is another player whose character could certainly be questioned when things are getting tough, but Sissoko really is the driving force behind everything positive Newcastle do going forward. In terms of the physical embodiment of an inspirational captain, Sissoko is certainly that. When he picks the ball up and drives at the opposition defence with one of his powerful and direct runs, the rest of the Magpies players are given a visible lift of confidence and belief. His goal against West Ham United kept Newcastle in the Premier League and highlighted how Sissoko can be a big-game player - but he had been anonymous for a large portion of the previous four months, which hardly makes for captaincy material. Making Sissoko skipper could be used as a tool to keep him on Tyneside, just as with Tim Krul, but is that a risk McClaren would be willing to take?
