10 Craziest World Cup Red Cards

3. Luis Suarez (2010)

One of these days, someone needs to sit Luis Suarez down and explain to him what ‘fair play’ means. The diminutive Uruguayan is well-known as an incredible finisher with a super scoring record, but he’s equally famous around the world for play-acting, diving, and even biting opponents, as well as this shocking incident in the 2010 World Cup.

It was the quarter finals, featuring Ghana against Uruguay. The game had finished 1-1 and gone into extra time. In the dying minutes, Ghana had a fantastic chance to score, but Suarez punched the ball off the line. Suarez was sent off and Ghana missed the resulting penalty, eventually losing the game on penalty kicks.

Suarez boasted that he’d made the best save of the tournament and it’s doubtful that anyone in Ghana has a good word to say about the Uruguayan after that. In the 2014 World Cup, he enraged Italians too by biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini. Which country will he wind up this summer? Only time will tell.
