10 Famous World Cup Moments Involving Newcastle Players

7. Jon Dahl Tomasson€™s Last Bow (2010)

There isn't a Newcastle fan worth their salt who could have predicted the success that would come Tomasson's way following a solitary season at St James' Park in which he did little to convince us that he could live up to his tag as the "new Michael Laudrup". And perhaps he never quite reached the level achieved by Laudrup but it didn't prevent him from becoming one of Europe's deadliest attacking midfielders and a Denmark great in his own right. 52 goals in 112 international's is testament to that and lends itself to the notion that our decision to give up on Tomasson was a premature one. It was in 2010 at the World Cup in South Africa where Tomasson scored his final Denmark goal to draw level with Poul "Tist" Nielsen the joint all-time top scorer for his country. Although it will be recorded as a late and meaningless consolation in a less-than memorable 3-1 defeat to Japan it was a seminal moment for the Danish veteran, nonchalantly tapping home the rebound from his own penalty in typical Tomasson fashion. A fitting way to bow out.
