10 Football Players Who Were Nearly One Club Men
6. Roman Weidenfeller
Similarly to Pellissier, we must look at the very beginning of Roman Weidenfeller's tenure in football to find the team that keeps him out of the illustrious 'one-club man' category.
Before his time at Borussia Dortmund, Weidenfeller emerged from the Kaiserslautern academy.
Just two years on from their successive promotion and Bundesliga victory, the keeper made his first-team debut in 2000. The 20-year-old shot-stopper made just 8 senior appearances across 2 seasons before joining Dortmund on a free transfer.
Fast-forward 16 years and Weidenfeller had collected a total 453 appearances, managing 148 clean sheets and winning six pieces of domestic silverware in that time as well as the 2014 World Cup.
Utilised as Jurgen Klopp's first choice at Der BVB until Thomas Tuchel replaced him with Roman Burki in 2014/15, Weidenfeller saw praise throughout his career for his handling and positioning.
As the player with the second-highest total appearances in the club's history, Weidenfeller is only the eighth player in Dortmund's history to be granted a testimonial.
Here the German lined up alongside the likes of Michael Ballack, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski in a game where he scored twice and saved a couple of penalties.
What a fine way to end your association at a club.
