10 Football Teams That Under-Performed In 2019/20
7. AS Monaco
AS Monaco's fall, rise and potential second fall has been interesting viewing over the last decade.
Following their surprise relegation in 2010/11, the club was bought out by Russian billionaire Dmitry Rybolovlev and it did not take long to reap the rewards of this new ownership.
Monaco won Ligue 2 and were quick to invest, bringing in top talents such as Radamel Falcao, Joao Moutinho and James Rodriguez. They also made large improvements in their scouting and youth departments, snapping up Tiemoue Bakayoko and Bernardo Silva whilst Kylian Mbappe emerged from their academy.
From 2013/14 to 2017/18 they finished no lower than 3rd and even beat Qatari-funded PSG to the Ligue 1 crown.
The owner, however, appeared to become bored with his project. Big fees were brought in for their best players with little effort put into replacing them and they were nearly relegated in 2018/19 after finishing 17th.
Fast-forward to the 2019/20 season and recruitment seemed positive once again with dynamic attackers Wissam Ben Yedder and Gelson Martins incoming.
But alas, they would fail again.
Often touted as one of Ligue 1's best teams following this significant investment, they finished 9th following a very slow start to the season and managerial instability.
