10 Great Footballers Who Made Terrible Managers

4. Paul Gascoigne

Gazza Paul Gascoigne will always be one of England's most treasured players and one of the most tragic things about him is that he should have been so much better, but personal problems have plagued his whole life. He still holds the status of a national treasure despite his wife-beating and substance abuse, probably because of the talent he displayed when wearing the shirts of England, Newcastle and Tottenham. Turbulence never escaped Gascoigne during his managerial career either as after a brief spell as a player-coach in China he returned to the UK to become player-manager of Boston United only to leave after just 11 games because the club refused him permission to appear on reality show I'm A Celebrity Get Me Out of Here. He then spent a short time in Portugal again in the role of a player-manager before once again returning home to be the boss of Kettering Town. This, as most will know, ended in disaster as Gascoigne was sacked after just 39 days because of his alcohol problems. Since then, there were rumours he would take over at non-league Garford Town, but nothing came of it and more recently he has been back in the news because of his worsening health.
