Of his 45-wins, the majority came through a finish. Hughes is the owner of 17 KO/TKO victories and 18 submission victories making it quite obvious he is well versed in grappling. Hughes faced Ricardo Almeida at UFC 117 in 2010; a rematch after their ADCC Submission Wrestling bout which Hughes had won. Almeida was an accomplished Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner himself earning a black belt under Renzo Gracie so when Hughes finished him in the fashion that he did, it came as a sizeable shock; particularly with the fight coming very late in Hughes illustrious career. A couple of minutes into the first round of the fight, Hughes hit Almeida with a hard left hook that knocked him down. Rather than going for a ground-and-pound finish, Hughes mounted Almeida and trapped him in a modified anaconda choke which forced Almeida to tap. For his efforts, Hughes earned submission of the night and his last victory inside the Octagon.
