Another big-name coach was on the shortlist for Manchester United after Sir Matt Busby exited his post as manager. At the time Revie was with Leeds United, and enjoying a greatly successful period with the Whites, winning two league titles and a host of domestic cups, before ending a 13-year stay in 1974 and proving exactly how important he was to the team in absence when Brian Clough disastrously replaced him. Amid the interest, reports suggested Manchester United offered a lucrative contract to lure him away from the Yorkshire outfit, but Revie was unmoved and stayed loyal to Leeds. In hindsight, it may have worked out for the best that the Mancunians failed in their task to sign Revie as his history was chequered with bribery allegations. He also received an eventually overturned 10-year suspension for bringing the game in to disrepute after selling his England resignation story before the Football Association has received his official letter. United have prided themselves on honesty and integrity with their choice of managers in the past, and Don Revie would have been a controversial appointment with the supporters as a result.
