10 Liverpool Heroes Whose Careers Have Nosedived Since Leaving Anfield
7. Pepe Reina
Pepe Reina will probably go on to win an abundance of trophies over the next couple of seasons. He will get his hands on more silverware than he could ever have possibly dreamed of touching during his eight seasons at Anfield. But he wont have earned any of them. Just a few years ago, it was Reina and not David de Gea who was touted to be the natural heir to Iker Casillas between the Spanish posts. He was one of the hottest goalkeepers in European football, and clubs were envious of the Reds for having ensnared him from Villareal in the summer of 2005. At just 32 years old, Reina has been afforded the indignity of being relegated to the role of water-carrier for Bayern Munich and German number one, Manuel Neuer. Having found himself out of favour at Liverpool following the acquisition of Simon Mignolet in 2013, Reina effectively wrote himself out of the clubs future by penning a goodbye letter to the supporters whilst still contracted to the Reds - a move which no doubt irked boss Brendan Rodgers. A semi-successful loan deal at Napoli was completed last season and on his return, there didnt seem to be any takers for the Spaniard so he was forced with no alternative but to take up the option of becoming a number two on the Bayern Munich bench instead. As de Gea cements his place in the Spanish starting XI with a host of excellent displays for both club and country while Reina kicks his ankles on the bench, the former Liverpool star might start to lament about what could have been.
