10 Liverpool Heroes Whose Careers Have Nosedived Since Leaving Anfield

6. Robbie Fowler

Scorer of 183 goals for the club, Robbie Fowler or €˜God€™ as he was otherwise known at Anfield, left the club on two occasions - the first time he was effectively forced out under Gerard Houllier in 2001 and the second time he departed a wizened and decrepit 32 year old hitman who was resigned to spending his remaining years with substandard outfits. Having signed for Leeds United in 2001 for £12 million, the England international should have been at the peak of his powers. But a pre-existing hip injury marred his performances, and his gradual decline in form echoed that of his club€™s, as the Elland Road outfit sank from a European place to 15th in the league as financial obscurity beckoned. A move to Eastlands was tied up in January 2003, with Manchester City bagging the former Liverpool great at a knock-down price of £3 million. Fowler would go on to score a modest total of 20 league goals for the club during his three and a half seasons in Manchester, before a sensational homecoming arrived in January 2006. Following a brief renaissance at his old stomping ground, Fowler was released from Anfield at the end of the 06/07 season and signed for Cardiff City where he scored just four goals in 13 Championship appearances. He then had one final crack at Premier League football with Blackburn Rovers, but was afforded just three goalless outings with the club, before finishing his career in Australia, first with North Queensland Fury and then Perth Glory.
