8. James Wilson

Ryan Giggs chances of succeeding him had been extinguished during a dismal home defeat at the hands of Sunderland the previous week. Manchester United had nothing to lose. The stand-in Welshman duly placed his faith in the kids for a clash with Hull City in May after a long, hard season - in which the senior figures in the Manchester United dressing-room had consistently let the club down. It proved to be a wise choice, as a star was uncovered in the form of 18 year old James Wilson, who marked his debut with two goals in a 3-1 victory over the FA Cup finalists. For the first goal, the teenager latched on to a Marouane Fellaini knock-down to rifle home the opener, and tapped home his second of the game after the Belgian had a shot saved just after the hour-mark. While the game was somewhat meaningless, it meant that the clubs dour season ended on something of a high note with Red Devils supporters going home with a bit of excitement regarding their latest youth prospect. Wilson has been granted further first-team opportunities this season under van Gaal and there have even been calls for him to replace the woefully off-form Robin van Persie in the starting XI.
