10 Mistakes Spurs Boss Mauricio Pochettino Has Made So Far
3. Putting Faith In & Persisting With The Wrong Players
The prime example of this point is Vlad Chiriches. Having proven himself to be quite the liability last season, he has already cost Spurs a win in the Europa League and looked decidedly dodgy in his other appearances. Chiriches dawdles on the ball too much and runs in to trouble - these aren't unforced errors, they're things he voluntarily and persistently does. It makes you wonder why Michael Dawson was sold. Granted, Dawson is older and not exactly world class, but he was a far more consistent player than Chiriches. And what of selling Gylfi Sigurdsson, but keeping players like Paulinho? Paulinho did very little last season, had an awful World Cup and has looked pretty terrible this season against smaller teams in the matches he has been picked for, whereas Gylfi Sigurdsson never lets anyone down and has proven that since leaving. Plus, Ryan Mason scored a great goal against Championship side Nottingham Forest in the Capital One Cup, but was that really enough to put him in the first team in the Premier League ahead of players like Mousa Dembele and Benjamin Stambouli? Why was Sandro sold if there was a space up for grabs in that position? Why is Tom Carroll out on loan if a young player was going to be in with a chance of earning a spot? And, as for strikers, Spurs don't have any strikers who can play up top on their own, but Pochettino opted not to bring any others in and, as a result, Spurs are predictably struggling for goals. Pochettino's judgement, therefore, has to be questioned.
