10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

7. Joaquín (2002)

Spain's quarter-final clash with South Korea will live long in the memory for a number of reasons. The Spanish arguably should have won the game, having two goals controversially ruled out. In the end, it went to penalties. Both teams started well, scoring their first three strikes. South Korea added a fourth and the baton was handed to Spain's right winger, Joaquín.

Joaquín had actually been playing with a bit of an injury at the time but stepped up for his country and attempted to keep his team's good run going by securing a semi-final spot. Unfortunately, his effort was pretty weak, lacking the necessary pace and precision to beat Korean keeper Lee Woon-Jae.

From there, South Korea's Hong Myung-Bo went on to finish the job by scoring his side's final penalty and Spain were knocked out. Joaquín's penalty technically lost them the game, but the decisions during regulation and extra time also contributed to Spain's defeat.
