10 Most Famous World Cup Penalty Misses

6. Jamie Carragher (2006)

When you need to score a penalty to stay in the World Cup, do you really want to hand that duty over to a man who scored almost twice as many own goals than regular league goals in his entire playing career? Well, that's what England did in their 2006 quarter final.

In what was perhaps England's most miserable penalty shootout performance (and that's saying something!), Carragher was fourth in line to help his side stay in the tournament. The team had endured a tough 0-0 draw with Portugal in which Wayne Rooney was famously sent off and got their penalties off to the worst possible start when Frank Lampard's strike was saved.

Owen Hargreaves kept England in it but then Steven Gerrard missed the Three Lions' third spot kick and up stepped Jamie Carragher. It was hearts-in-mouths time for England fans and those hearts were broken just seconds later when the Liverpool defender sent his strike straight at keeper Ricardo, who pushed it up onto the bar.
