Istanbul€™s giants go head to head in the Intercontinental Derby in an often-problematic fixture which splits the Asian and European folk of Istanbul.

The epic rivalry between the two top Turkish clubs can be traced back to some social, cultural and regional differences when in a 1934 friendly, the hatred-filled tension on the pitch became so high, a mass brawl erupted on the playing surface whereby Gala and Fener players and fans descended into an all-out brawl.

Troublesome incidents, since this point, have featured heavily in the Istanbul derby ever since. Graeme Souness€™ infamous planting of a giant Galatasaray flag into the centre of the Fenerbache pitch caused wild outrage in the stands, leading to devastating riots on the streets of Turkey.

And the devastating hatred between the two sides still subsists to this day, emphasised by the 2013 racist chanting-blighted fixture at the Sukru Saracoglu Stadium, which tragically resulted in a huge out-of-stadium brawl whereby a 19-year old Fenerbahce fan was stabbed to death by a Galatasaray ultra.
