https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EDdeWXucP-wThe Superclasico represents Argentinas most fierce rivalry in a derby which is known worldwide as one of the most atmospherically-charged occasions on the entire sporting calendar. The majority of these clashes between Argentinas two biggest club are marred by pre and post-match fighting between rival supporters which has given this fixture an intimidating reputation.
The Superclasico has, like so many of the aforementioned derbies on the list, played host to a number of tragedies over the years. The most fatal of which came in 1968 when 71 fans were killed and another 150 badly injured in a crushing stampede in the away end of River Plates El Monumental stadium.
Reports from the time stated that Boca fans had hurled burning River Plate flags from the upper tiers of the away end which landed amongst their own supporters, leading to outspread chaos amongst the fans in the lower tier, resulting in the barbaric stampede.
Whatever the cause for the Puerta 12 tragedy, the incident has given the Superclasico additional significance for the Buenos Aires people.
