10 Most Memorable Failed Transfer Sagas

6. Wesley Sneijder €“ Inter Milan To Man United

Once Louis van Gaal was appointed in May of this year, Manchester United supporters may have been experiencing some flashbacks to 2011 as they picked up the back pages of newspapers. Once again linked to the club was the Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder, 30 years old now, but proving in the World Cup what a valuable asset he can still be. Three years ago, Sneijder was 27 years old, and just a year earlier, had been the jewel in the treble-winning Inter Milan crown. It€™s no wonder Man United were prepared to part with £17 million to entice him to the Theatre of Dreams. For the best part of 18 months, it was very much a case of will he-won€™t he as the club were determined to land their man. With Sneijder admitting his inclination to sign for the club, Inter Milan were adamant that the Dutchman would be staying. With erroneous reports stating every second day that Sneijder €˜had agreed a deal for Manchester United€™, it€™s no wonder that the proposed transfer almost drove supporters to tears. With Sir Alex Ferguson having privately admitted that the club were involved in negotiating a contract offer for the diminutive midfielder, chief executive David Gill refuted these claims, leaving supporters in utter confusion.

Following the reappearing reports linking the club to Sneijder this summer, it looks like we may not be done with the Sneijder saga.
