Is there anything more satisfying than when your football team hands out a beating to a rival so severe that even the opposition fans applaud? That was the case on August 27th, 1988, as Rangers dished out a hammering during Celtic's centenary year. The quality of one strike in particular from English midfielder Ray Wilkins apparently had sections of the green and white support clapping, because they knew they'd seen a great goal. Frank McAvennie had given Celtic the lead earlier, before Ally McCoist (who else?) leveled things up at one apiece. Then, as if written in the stars, Wilkins produced a strike straight out of the top drawer, one that even the best goalkeepers in the world may have been unable to stop. The ball sat up for the diminutive battler brilliantly, and he did his bit, connecting sweetly with a terrific volley that nearly burst the net behind Pat Bonner. Another goal from Ally McCoist, one from Kevin Drinkell and another from Mark Walters sealed a 5-1 success for Rangers, who looked like they were well on their way to reclaiming the top prize in Scottish football. The previous season had again been a disappointed, with the Gers finishing 3rd, but this 5-1 sent a statement out, Rangers were back.
