Bayle really started to showcase his talents in the late 1980s. He dominated the 1987 French National 125cc Championship for his first national title and placed an impressive third in the 125cc World Championship. The following year, Bayle really showed his dominance in the sport; winning the 125cc World title, French National title, and the 250cc French Supercross Championship. 1989 saw the beginning of Bayles assault on American motocross. He, along with Hondas Roger DeCoster, decided on competing in a few AMA events, while still contesting the 250cc World Championship. He instantly made an impact, winning the 250cc National event in Gainesville. As expected, he also won the World title in the same class. Even more impressive was his victory in the 500cc class at the Unadilla, beating the likes of Rick Johnson and Jeff Stanton. However, it was 1991 which Bayle truly made his mark in America. He entered the 250cc Supercross championship, the 250cc Motocross Championship and the 500cc Motocross Championship. He won all three. Bayle felt as if he had won all there was to win in motocross. He then turned to road racing, and later to four wheels, having success in everything he entered. Jean-Michel Bayle remains one of the most versatile and talented people to grace the sport. He was introduced to the Motorcycle Hall of Fame in 2000.
