January 2011 would see the British transfer record smashed and shockwaves sent through the Premier League, as Chelsea splashed out £50m to take Liverpool favourite Fernando Torres to Stamford Bridge.

In a move which looked like being excellent business for the Blues at the time, Torres moving to Chelsea sent a shock through football in England as the £50m mark was breached for the first time.

Torres was a 'darling' in the eyes of Liverpool supporters, and despite only having one goal to his name that season, he was still very much worshipped in a similar ilk to that of Robbie Fowler and Michael Owen had been at Anfield. The move set in motion a chain of events which would see Andy Carroll arrive at Anfield for £35m, a move which would also, like Torres', turn sour.

Torres would go on to have a miserable time of things for Chelsea, missing numerous easy chances during his spell at the Bridge and often being ridiculed by opposing fans. He did have his moment with the club though, tearing away to score the crucial winning goal away at Barcelona to the sound of Gary Neville's infamous 'goalgasm'.
