10 Who Did Nothing At Liverpool But Excelled For Their Country

9. Milan Jovanovic

Like Salif Diao, Serbian winger Milan Jovanovic was picked up by the club prior to a World Cup. Signed to a pre-contract in May 2010 by Rafael Benitez, Jovanovic would prove to be a parting gift as the Spaniard would be gone from the club within a month. The 29 year old€™s 13-month stay at Liverpool was not impressive, coinciding with Roy Hodgson€™s despairing reign as Liverpool boss. After just two goals in 18 appearances, the former Standard Liege man was quickly returned to Belgium, signing a two-year contract at Anderlecht. However, Jovanovic has always had something of a €˜golden touch€™ for his nation, scoring eleven times from out wide in 44 appearances, since making his debut in 2007. Having finished as the Serbian top scorer in the 2010 World Cup qualifying campaign, he brought his blistering form to South Africa, firing the winning goal past German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer in a Group D fixture. He may not have done much for Liverpool, but his contributions for his country will not have been forgotten in a hurry - especially not that famous strike to down the Germans.
