10 Who Did Nothing At Liverpool But Excelled For Their Country
7. Boudewijn Zenden
Some might say its a bit harsh to proclaim Boudewijn Bolo Zenden a flop from his time at Anfield, and they would be right. The man was acquired from Middlesbrough on a free transfer in 2005, played 36 games in two seasons, including two legs of a Champions League semi-final and the subsequent final, before moving on. No more, no less. However, when one goes shopping and they find an item being sold for next to nothing, it would be ideal to check the sell-by date. An argument could be made that the Dutchman was damaged goods by the time he had finished his spell at Anfield, having sustained a serious cruciate ligament injury during his first season, before sustaining a bad knee injury in his second. The former Barcelona winger played just 23 Premier League games for the Reds, and moved so slowly around the pitch. A popular figure amongst the Reds faithful he may have been, his contribution to the cause was minimal. Considering his repertoire of previous clubs, including PSV, Barcelona and Chelsea, its no surprise that his international career was so successful, however. Having broke through at the 1998 World Cup, starting in the semi-final defeat to Brazil before scoring for Holland in the third-place play-off, Zenden established quickly himself on the left wing for the Dutch. Euro 2000 allowed him to truly shine, as his pace allowed him to function as both a wing-forward and a wing-back. Having bagged goals against Denmark and France in the group stage, Zenden was unable to prevent the Dutch from being eliminated in the semi-final, but he was still named in the UEFA Team of the Tournament. Euro 2004 proved to be his last tournament before retiring with 54 caps and seven goals.
