10 Who Did Nothing At Liverpool But Excelled For Their Country

5. Brad Friedel

One could be forgiven for forgetting that Liverpool are amongst Brad Friedel€™s previous clubs - it seems like he€™s played for half the Premier League, considering he first arrived in England 20 years ago. At Liverpool, the US keeper managed just over 30 games in almost three years, having to play second fiddle to the likes of David James and Sander Westerveld. If only Liverpool knew what a gem they possessed within their ranks. With 82 caps, Friedel is the fourth most-capped US goalkeeper of all time. He has represented his nation at the Olympics, and made his World Cup bow in 1998, before finally realising his international potential in 2002, producing a string of fine performances as the USA reached the quarter-finals. He became the first goalkeeper to save two penalty kicks during regular play in a World Cup since 1974, and was dubbed €˜The Human Wall€™ by supporters for his incredible performances. In truth, he was the original Tim Howard. The performances in 2002 have become the stuff of legend in US soccer folklore, widely regarded as some of the best ever displays from a US player at in World Cup history.
