10 Who Did Nothing At Liverpool But Excelled For Their Country
3. Fernando Morientes
They were supposed to have bought a prolific marksman who would fire them above Merseyside rivals Everton in the battle for fourth and salvage Champions League football in Rafael Benitez first season at the helm. In the end, former Galactico Fernando Morientes flopped dramatically, netting just three league goals in his first half-season for the club, forcing the Reds to force Champions League qualification for next season the hard way - in Istanbul. His following season wasnt much better, as he netted just nine times in 45 outings for the Reds, before finally cutting the chord on a miserable stay in England in the summer of 2006. Having netted 173 goals in Spain, and 22 during his lone season at Monaco, it is no real surprise that Morientes boasts an impressive goal return at international level as well. Having struck up a rapport at club level, the Morientes and Raul partnership worked perfectly in the colour of Spain as well, with the former netting 27 goals in 47 appearances. Having scored a brace in the first five minutes of his debut against Sweden in 1998, the Real Madrid hitman never looked back and is now ranked fourth in the Spanish all-time topscorer list. He has scored goals at the 1998 and 2002 World Cups, and Euro 2004, and while he was a surprise omission in Euro 2000, it was due to his poor spell at Liverpool that counted against him when Luis Aragones came to picking his Spanish squad for the 2006 World Cup.
