10 Who Did Nothing At Liverpool But Excelled For Their Country
2. Milan Baros
Milan Baros was simply a different beast when he threw on the white of Czech Republic. At Liverpool, there was no question - he was struggling. Having been granted one appearance for the club during the 01/02 season, the former Banik Ostrava striker failed to hit double figures in his 27 Premier League appearances the following season, before finding the net just once in 13 appearances during the 03/04 season. His days were surely numbered. Within two months, Real Madrid and Barcelona were phoning his agent, and vying for his signature. If Baros was a player who had been finding it hard to dislodge Emile Heskey from a desperately average Liverpool starting line-up, the evidence was certainly not on show at Euro 2004, as he continued his blistering-hot international form to net five goals and scoop the Golden Ball. He returned to Liverpool with slightly more purpose and confidence, but still only managed to bag nine goals - equalling his tally from 02/03 and it proved to be his final season before Aston Villa wrapped up his signing. For the Czech Republic, he has managed to bag an impressive 41 goals in 93 appearances, and is the second-highest tally in his nations history, behind former Borussia Dortmund striker Jan Koller. What were they feeding him on those international weekends?
