10 One-Trick Footballing Ponies Who Made It At The Top Level
3. Andy Carroll
West Ham's lumbering centre-forward has two tricks up his sleeve, to be fair, but only if you count the ability to make trapping a football look like a skill as difficult to master as the ancient Chinese art of kung-fu.
Carroll is only ever given a run-out when his teams are in need of a six-foot-four battering ram they can hopefully launch the ball towards during times of crisis - provided that he isn't injured, of course (which he almost always is).
After a barn-storming start to his Premier League career following Newcastle's promotion in 2010, Carroll was seen by many as a more subtle Three Lions alternative to Peter Crouch, for no other reason than the fact that he's a couple of inches shorter and sports a continental-style pony-tail.
Ironically, though, he also has none of the Stoke man's grace.
