If there's one thing every England fan can agree on, it's that the team is lacking in the midfield department. With top class players like Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling up front, and a huge number of decent enough defensive options, the Three Lions are alright at both ends of the pitch, but there's an evident lack of quality in the middle.

Sadly for England, most international games, especially at major tournaments like the World Cup, tend to be won or lost in the midfield. The reason Spain were so successful was thanks to the likes of Xavi and Iniesta pulling the strings, and England need more firepower and imagination in the middle of the park if they want to compete.

Jonjo Shelvey could be the man to provide that spark. A hotheaded player, the 26-year-old has seen red twice this season, but he's also proven to be a highly important part of Rafa Benitez's successful Newcastle squad. With a good eye for a pass, plenty of creativity, a decent long shot and pretty good set pieces, Shelvey has a lot going for him, but will it be enough to convince Southgate?
