10 Players You Didn't Know West Ham Almost Signed
10. Eidur Gudjohnsen
Eidur Gudjohnsen played for so many Premier League clubs, it seems almost rude that he turned down the opportunity to pick up a weekly wage from West Ham in 2010. A man who has pulled on the strip of five Premier League sides, and of course the Catalan giants Barcelona, he was offered two chances to put pen to paper at Upton Park, only for the Scandinavian star to get cold feet.
With owners David Sullivan and David Gold seemingly having ensnared the Icelandic golden boy on loan from Monaco in January 2010, the deal was scuppered by the Champions League-chasing Spurs.
The pursuit would not end there, however, finally reaching a halt 18 months later, following his release from Stoke City. Sam Allardyce had grown weary over Gudjohnsens hesitancy in accepting the clubs offer, and consequently withdrew it.
West Ham supporters will not feel too sore about missing out on the former Chelsea hitman. It was apparent that when he left the Blues, he never quite recaptured the magic of his glory years. Having peaked alongside Lampard, Terry and co., Gudjohnsen was very much in the swan song of his career when the likes of West Ham, Stoke City and Fulham came knocking. A combined total of 14 appearances and no goals at the latter two clubs, and a solitary finish for Spurs in eleven run-outs, say it all.
