10 Players Nobody Expected Arsenal To Sign

2. Mesut Ozil

It was a summer of discontent for Arsenal supporters, as the club was continuously knocked back like a drunkard in a nightclub during their tireless pursuit for transfers. Not only was the club€™s £40 million bid for Uruguayan talisman Luis Suarez baulked at by Liverpool, but they were forced to wait several weeks for Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain to decide that he preferred a move to Napoli. With just a week left of the summer transfer window, Arsene Wenger failed in a double-swoop for Real Madrid duo Angel Di Maria and Karim Benzema. The doom-mongers were out in force at the Emirates Stadium by the time deadline day swung around. Two first-team players had been drafted in on free transfers - Auxerre nobody Yaya Sanogo and AC Milan misfit Mathieu Flamini. It certainly didn€™t look promising. Ironically, the club has their north London rivals to thank for their last-ditch transfer coup, with Gareth Bale€™s world-record move to Real Madrid setting in motion a ripple effect that ended up with £42.5 million playmaker Mesut Ozil at Arsenal. Ozil had finished top of the assist charts in La Liga the previous season, and had been hailed as the club€™s €˜second-best player€™. He was held in such high regard at the Santiago Bernabeu, that supporters were pleading with the hierarchy not to sell him at Bale€™s unveiling. It was a bolt from the blue for Gunners€™ supporters, and a shock from which they needed at least six weeks to recover from.
