10 Players Nobody Expected Barcelona To Sign

3. Luis Suarez

It probably shouldn€™t have been as much of a shock as it was, considering the man had spent the previous summer issuing come-and-get-me pleas to the elite sides in Spain. However, not only had the lethal Uruguayan enjoyed the finest season of his career, and vowed to stick with the Reds, but Luis Suarez had just incurred the wrath of the official world footballing governing body on the biggest stage of all during the summer. As soon as he sank those teeth into the shoulder of Giorgio Chielleni, everybody knew that FIFA would come down hard on him. It was bad enough that he hadn€™t learned his lesson from his lengthy ten-match ban for the same offence for Liverpool in 2013, but now his rabid and violent tendencies had just been exposed at the World Cup - they needed to make an example of him, and everybody knew it. Despite being inducted with a four-month ban from all football-related activity, the Catalonian outfit still shelled out £75 million for him. This was a man who has been accused of racism, diving and stamping on opponents, and was last year listed on Spanish football website, El Gol Digital, as the fifth dirtiest footballer in the world. For a club that prides itself on its€™ pristine, almost holier-than-thou traditions, it seemed a bit of a strange move for Barcelona to part with so much money for such a loose canon. It€™s not as if they didn€™t extra firepower anyway, with Lionel Messi and Neymar two of the best marksmen in the business.
