He may have been a bit of a surprise choice as boss at the Nou Camp this summer, but Luis Enriques arrival as a player in 1996 caused a lot more shockwaves to ripple around Spain. Not many players cross enemy lines between Madrid and Catalonia, but after 213 appearances for Los Blancos, thats exactly what the former Spanish international did. It was a stunning move, and mirrored by the example of Sol Campbells decision to leave Spurs for Arsenal on a free transfer in 2001. Having spent five seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu, Enrique shocked the nation by running down his contract and promptly penning a deal at fierce rivals Barcelona. The Catalans were sceptical at first, not just because of his obvious Madrid ties, but also due to his poor goalscoring record. 18 goals in 213 appearances? Its a wonder the Bernabeu wasnt hosting a party when they got rid of him. The decision to re-energise himself at the Nou Camp proved an inspired one, however, as he netted 46 league goals in his first three seasons, before trailing off slightly for his remaining seasons at the club. Still, with seven pieces of silverware won during his eight seasons at the club, Enrique will feel proud at that brave decision he made in the summer of 1996 when he crossed enemy lines.
