10 Players Nobody Expected Chelsea To Sign

5. Cesc Fabregas

Not even Cesc Fabregas himself could have possibly foreseen this. It looks very likely that the former Arsenal midfielder will achieve something he never quite managed during his first spell in English in winning the Premier League - only this time, it will be clothed in the colours of an enemy. When Fabregas tore himself away from the club who nurtured him for eight years since he was 16 years old, in a bid to return home and make it at the club he grew up supporting, he must have never envisaged returning to the Premier League. For him, Barcelona was the last stop, as he would succeed the great Xavi Hernandez in the Catalonian midfield and realise his dream of becoming a Camp Nou legend. It didn€™t quite materialise that way, and Fabregas has found himself back in England after just three years, but Chelsea supporters must still have to pinch themselves that they have Arsenal€™s former talisman within their ranks. With the 27 year old Spaniard once having declared that he €˜will never sign for another English team€™, it was certainly a shock to see him holding up the blue jersey following a £30 million move in June, and for Arsenal supporters, it was like a dagger through the chest. Having had first-refusal on their former icon this summer, they had passed on the opportunity to take him back, instead placing their hopes on German playmaker Mesut Ozil. With seven assists so far this season, Arsene Wenger might just feel he made a mistake.
